Welcome to Ashland Link
I'm a fan of the arts in Ashland - the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, naturally, but also the other theaters in town, the galleries, the university... all of it. OSF alone puts on +/- 27 shows a week in the high season, a few less when the Elizabethan is closed, and it does this from February through November. That’s a lot of people seeing a lot of plays. Surely I’m not the only one of them in love with the Festival and the city?
Ashland Link is a place to talk about the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and also the city of Ashland: the places to stay, the dining options, the other entertainment options in town (it’s a college town, for pete’s sake!), even the news around town. This is only going to be fun if other people think it's a good idea too, so I encourage you to let me know what you think. Post on the message boards, leave comments on this or any other article, or drop me an email. Even better, skip the feedback about the site and let's talk about Ashland and the Festival. Welcome!

Read. Share... say what now?
As the site starts to ramp up in to full functionality, two key components are coming back after a period of dormancy. At the outset I had both forums and post commenting turned on, but even this lightly-trafficked site was getting pummeled mercilessly by spam. Failing to solve th issue, I simply turned off things completely. Now, tentatively, I believe I have things figured out. The wonderful reCAPTCHA function (http://recaptcha.net/) looks like it is working for new account registration for both the main site and the forums. As such, I've brought both back online. As of this writing the forums look...er, atrocious, but that will go away in the next 24 hours or so. reCAPTCHA is now also working on comments, so you don't have to register to comment here but you DO need to prove that you're a human. :)
Speaking of accounts, note that one account sign-up is access to the main site and the forums. Once you're signed up you can also post your own reviews of plays and the other things we will be reviewing shortly. Registration is super-painless, I make no demands about real names or anything, it's mostly a formality to keep away the spammers.

News from Ashland for March 05, 2010
Kind of a mix between Ashland Blog and Developer Blog, but what the hey. I'd really like to hear from anyone in Ashland who'd like to review ... well, practically anything. Theater, restaurants, hotel/motel/b&bs, even straight up retail shops (not chains, the local boutiques in Ashland naturally). The way the site is set up, once I publish a review anybody can respond with their own review. That said, I'm not going to get around to EVERYTHING any time soon. Anyway, I'd love to get (in particular) all of the Oregon Cabaret shows reviewed, and getting a lot of lodging reviews will only ever happen with help. Contact me at john (at) ashlandlink (dot) com if you're interested!
